What are you guys using for gear lube on the 60’s and up Evinrude/Johnson ?
Seems like the E/J are getting harder to find unless on line . Idk maybe it’s just me ..July 28, 2022 at 11:05 pm #263765I use Mercury 90 weight gear oil available at ACE hardware.
July 29, 2022 at 5:47 am #263768I use Yamaha regular, not HD, gear lube. I have a reason for this, although I am no scientist and may be mistaken. Yamaha offers two different types and I believe the last time I knew, so did Mercury. It makes no economic sense to do this unless there is a true reason. There are classifications GL4 and GL5. GL5 is more heavy duty (thus Yamaha calls theirs HD) but I am pretty sure it is HD because of certain additives, one of which is sulfur Sulfur is corrosive to yellow metals and OMC lower units are full of them. In my mind (a warped world indeed) maybe this is why I am seeing more and more OMC lower units with badly worn pinion and drive shaft bearings. So, I use Yamaha regular, which has a rating of GL4. I have never been told this in class but I suspect this is why their smaller engines use regular and 4.2 liter and up use HD. I know for sure that there are no yellow metals in their bigger lower units.
Long live American manufacturing!

Where do you buy your Yamaha regular gear oil at? Also any comments on the Johnson /Evinrude lower unit oil?
July 31, 2022 at 6:18 am #263841Any Yamaha dealer should stock some. They have it in small tubes that you can fill the gear case with directly, or quarts or even 5 gallon pails. I do have to say that last fall, we had trouble getting it. Some kind of stupid shortage, like so many other things these days. As for E/J oil, we were not dealers for Evinrude so I really have not looked at their oil. I did notice that Mercury HD is only GL4..Volvo is GL5, so beware of that.
Long live American manufacturing!
