Truly there is nothing wrong with the “rabbit hole” so long as you enter with eyes wide open. Actually it can be fun and source of satisfaction when you come out having successfully completed the project. Been there done that! $$$ and many hours invested in an old $40 outboard…. just because!

Yep. 551080 is the drive shaft seal.  marineengine has 10 of them in stock.  But they don’t show a picture.  I’ll bet it is nothing but a rubber washer.

I have a bunch of rabbit holes too.  My special weakness was the Gale Buccaneer 3hp.  I have all years 1956-1963.  Some original, like new, some built up from parts.

Thanks Joe / Dale / Frank,

Frank, I dream I can get my motor to look so good. Once I get it running in the next couple days (hopefully), I will make a decision. Big hurdle is the gas tank. Cowls are in decent shape, but the tank is pretty dented up. Does anyone have any experience with repairing a tank? Reminder, this tank is not just a tank. It’s that “art deco” look tank with the raised trim around the side where I would assume one could cut the tank open, repair and tig back together. With this trim element, no idea how repairs could be done. The trim has a lot of grooves that would likely be impossible to duplicate.

            Thx again guys!

Edit: I was mistaken, the deco is on the cowls, there is only one seam of raised aluminum around the tank. 😬 oops
