Anyone familiar with Mariner outboards? I’m looking at a 15hp made in Japan motor. 651 series.
Can I still get parts for this?
Sn80027
Any info is appreciated.

Even if Marine Engine does not carry a particular part that you need….you can use a resource like this to get the part number so you can search elsewhere.
Dis Yamaha build your Mariner? Do you know the equivalent or similar Yamaha model number?
September 10, 2025 at 11:03 am #299752Tag says SU800271 upon closer inspection. Also says made in Japan. Assuming it’s a Yammie.
I’m going to email Marine Engine.
September 10, 2025 at 11:14 am #299753I emailed Marine Engine. Hopefully they can get info.
Outboard looks to be in great shape. The guy wants $750. Looks to be low hour.
September 10, 2025 at 12:30 pm #299755Marine Engine can’t find any info on it.
I’m going to pass on this one. If I can’t find an impellar or carb kit not going to buy the outboard. So sad.

That’s a crazy high price IMHO for that motor.
September 10, 2025 at 7:23 pm #299773I must agree. For that price you could easily have a dozen Elgins or similar (kind of undesirable) motors, which would be somewhat finniky if you intend to actually USE it for purposes other than having fun with an old outboard. That being said, I have had decent success trolling with “the beat up 5.5 HP with the sears logo embossed on the rope start, that runs with a few pine needles in the fuel tank”-roughly quoting the Antique Outboard Book with a few words missing or wrong because i’m quoting off of memory. It sure runs as good as or better than a lot of motors made in the last 40 years, and I got it thrown in on a package deal, so I am certainly not complaining.

September 10, 2025 at 9:21 pm #299776I fish Lake St. Clair, often times several miles from shore. Also the St. Clair River. Getting stranded miles from shore is a big concern if mine. I’m running in a 14 foot Sea Nymph.
Peace of mind is worth something. Ive got an 18hp 59 Evinrude. Sometimes it doesn’t go into forward gear. One time I had limp back to port in reverse a mile and a half. I was just looking for something more reliable.
Probably was overpriced. Maybe ill tear into the old Evinrude, again.
Thanks guys.
September 11, 2025 at 8:40 am #299796I understand. I think that it really comes down to a matter of how well-tuned and maintained a motor is. I would think that a Japanese motor and that Evinrude would be just as well built, but the Evinrude would obviously be more worn down with time. If you can get that evinrude tuned well and fix the shifting issues (maybe a new dog clutch?), you would be in just as good shape as with a newer motor, because a 50’s Evinrude is probably a lot simpler than a newer motor, even if it is a 2 stroke. I couldn’t blame you for getting a new motor though.

September 11, 2025 at 10:29 am #299802Ok guys. I’m going to do an evaluation on the 1959 Evinrude 18hp.
Shifter cable or clutch dog troubleshooting
Compression testing
I own a Merc-O-Tronic (still trying to figure it all out). So coils and condensors will be tested
It’s hard to start after sitting for a week, however it will fire up in 2 pulls after sitting for only a day. So fuel system will be checked as well.
Thanks to everyone for chiming in. I’m more motivated to get the ole Evinrude guessed up.
