I need to install a kill switch on a ‘fishing’ Mercury Mark 25 that I will be running on a B runabout. As I understand it I need to bring wires from the points (at the condenser screw) to each side of a kill switch so when the clip is pulled the points wires close to each other and thus ground out. My problem is I can’t see how to thread the wires out of the points area. Has anyone done this that can try to explain to me or better yet send a photo of their routing? I understand the theory what I need is someone who has done it on this specific model engine.
August 22, 2017 at 2:51 am #63622I drill a hole in the mag plate for the wires. Connecting the two points together does not work for me. Instead, I use a double pole single throw bat handle switch to ground both sets of points. In case of an upset, you don’t want the motor to continue to sputter – you want it dead stopped.
August 22, 2017 at 2:57 am #63623Did you drill the hole slightly to port from the front so it doesn’t rub on anything? Reading other posts I understand the douple pole system but not sure of a supply source with a tag line to disconnect. Have you a part number?
August 22, 2017 at 1:07 pm #63632The simple, two wire system has worked on Phelon magnetos for me for the last 50+ years. It does not work on the two cylinder Bendix-Scintilla magnetos. The cam profile of the Bendix-Scintilla mag. does not allow the points to be closed for a long enough duration in order to effectively short out the opposite system. Three wires required for those. August 22, 2017 at 3:02 pm #63637Thanks for your replys guys. My question and request for help was not to start again the flogging of weither to have a 2 wire or 3 wire system but to find out where people who have done so have run their wires. I have found that sometimes it is much easier to see how others have run wires successfully rather than just start drilling and find out there was a better way. So once again, can anyone explain how and where they have run their kill switch wires on their Mark 25s?
August 22, 2017 at 4:17 pm #63642"a supply source with a tag line". I just take a toggle switch and drill a hole for a wire tied to the lanyard. 😉 Drill the hole where it interferes least. I add a dab of silicone to seal against water intrusion in case of a spill. I have had several Bendix mags go swimming and restart without pulling the flywheel.
Did not realize the diff in the Bendix and Phelon mags – thx for the explanation. 🙂
