I’m a little stuck here. I am trying to get the gear foot off of a Maritn 20. Serial A 8147. I pulled the powerhead, removed the drive shaft. The water tube and drive shaft tube are still in place. on the gear foot, the water pump and associated are out, prop shaft and pinion gear are out. The one screw in the rear that holds the gear foot to the mid section is out. My problem is the forward fastener that holds the gear foot to the midsection. Where and how do I get it out. Mine is the earlier version that doesn’t have the nut connected to the stud exposed on the mid section. I do have some play going side to side on the forward fastening point. I did remove the upper swivel tube cover to see if there was a nut hiding…Nothing. Also , I am not seeing any kind of fastener inside the lower unit forward.
Do I need a special Mercury tool *6306-AB or a new set of glasses? Thanks Matt.

Per the Martin manual, now you simply unscrew the gearcase from the forward long screw which is held in the proper position, and kept from turning, by a small set screw in the side of the housing.
Afterwards, when assembling gearcase to tower, screw it onto the forward screw until tight. If gearcase isn’t aligned then, the set screw will have to be loosened to allow the long screw to rotate slightly for alignment purposes, then align the gearcase, then tighten set screw.
