Not familiar with these motors at all, but thought I’d check this one for spark, etc
What is missing around the flywheel here? There are a bunch of screw holes but only 4 of them are for the recoil. Is there supposed to be some kind of cage or something for the pawls to engage?
What kind of magnetos do these have? I see the words “springfield” on the flywheel . Does that make these bendix/scintilla mags?
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!!

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

The recoil ratchet cage is clearly visible on the flywheel.
You got me scratching my head, concerning the screw holes. They would be for the screws that hold the two-piece tank together. But I thought the “40” had a one-piece tank. (?) it’s too early in the morning.October 14, 2020 at 7:09 am #218527The 40 has a 2-piece tank and those holes should be filled with 10-24 fillister headed bolts. Perhaps now would be a good time to disassemble the fuel tank and reseal it???
The 40 is a sweet motor, very smooth and quiet. I think you’ll enjoy it once it’s all back together again.

October 14, 2020 at 10:16 am #218546I recently sold a 40, but took this pic before I did. I’m not sure but I think the screws in question hold the top and bottom of tank together.

So it looks like somebody was planning to take the tank apart then changed their mind and forgot to put the screws back in?
