My copy of the early Martin service manual suggests that the flexible shaft for the choke control should have the pin (at the end away from the carb) facing the rear of the motor when the choke butterfly is off or in the run position. I find that this hinders the function of the choke, with the pin hitting the lower shroud and the cable walking back to choke when I run it. I opened another Martin 40 that I have and the cable is installed with the pin facing back, but after examining it I can’t get the shroud back on and have it be functional. What am I missing here?

I’ve just ignored the manual and mounted the cable so that the pin faces forward in the run position and that seems to work right. Could the manual be wrong or am I more twisted than my flexi cable?

If I remember correctly –you can purchase a kit to make the choke mounted from the carb
Use the carb bracket from another motor? or contact Russ Larson

Thanks, OBN. I can see why they changed over to the carb bracket. I still want to understand the flexible cable service.
