Thanks everyone for the help on the Johnson 15 hp. It is running much better! However I have another project I’m tackling. I have a 1953 Martin 45 outboard and I cannot get the flywheel to stop scrubbing the coils! I’ve tried different coils, flywheel. Tried moving them in as much as I can without drilling. The motor runs but if you were to take your hand off the handle it just slides the throttle over to the off position. anyine have any ideas how to fix it? Thanks!!

I’d guess the coil laminations either have been swapped from another mag plate, or they have been swapped in positions on same plate. They were originally mounted on the plate, then the whole assembly was machined to provide proper clearance. In other words, swapping them messes up the clearance. You might try swapping them around, and if that doesn’t work you may have to do some creative engineering. Or put them in a lathe and turn the diameters as was originally done.

Any vibration when running? I had an OMC that rubbed, but discovered
that the crankshaft was slightly bent 🙁

          Prepare to be boarded!

Take something like a magic marker
and cover the shoes. Then put the flywheel
on and rotate it to see where its hitting.
Then loosen the screws slightly and with a small
hammer tap the shoe to move it away from the
flywheel. If you cant get enough movement to
clear the flywheel file off enough material
where its touching till you have clearance.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Do you have enough friction on the mag plate? If the friction screw is to loose the coils could rub. The screw should be on the bottom of the mag plate.
