Could someone explain to me what purposes these metering rods do #7 and #8 of this diagram https://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1989&hp=8&model=J8RCEC&manufacturer=Johnson&section=Cylinder+%26amp%3B+Crankcase

They are about 3mm or .12 inches in diameter one is 1 5/8 inches long  the other is 1 1/4 inches long.  They are made of solid plastic.  I am guessing they allow air/fuel to be drained since they do not totally seal the hole they slip into?  I have 2 of them but I am putting 3 motors together and wonder could I use 3mm brass rod instead of them or would it be to heavy or not allow them to move back and forth or if that would work?

      Thanks,

      Joe

it says  crankcase drain (tube)  so it must  do something like the purge valves on older  cd ad qd series of motors

sends  unsued  fuel oil mix   from the crankcase   down and  out the exhaust  route… At idle  fuel oil  vapours  don’t make it all to  the  cylinders  for combustion  and accumulates in the cc so it gets pushed out  on the next down stroke  crankcase build up of pressure.

I would not replace a tube with a brass rod piece

        or something else 🙂

They could be tubes to supply extra oil to the upper and lower crank bearings. They sure seem to make these engines run leaner so it could be an attempt to lengthen then bearing life.

possible  but wouldn’t the bearing self oil themselves from fuel/oil vapors ? circling inside the  crankcase ?

Yea you are correct about that…would have to see the block/tubes …see where they come from and go to, to understand what they might be for. I’m sure there’s someone out there that works on the newer OMC’s that knows. It’s weird that they are called drain tubes in one line and metering rods in another.

Thanks everyone.  I will purchase the plastic ones just to be safe.

I did trace where the tubes go to and from.  They start at the top bearing (not sure if its below or above bearing since case is together) which is where the top metering rod goes then through a hole in the reed valve plate into the front of the top of intake manifold then down a C type canal to the bottom of intake manifold then through a hole with a screen on the reed plate then down the other hole where the bottom metering rod goes in crankcase just below the bottom bearing.

                Thanks,

                Joe
