Recently purchased motor has this chain, was that something normal back in the day? Is it in case the motor jumps off boat? or an anti-theft device? Dealer sold accessory?

I am going to stick my neck out and say that is a home-brew set-up you have there. Carl K would never make allow anything that simple to be made for his motors.

Not really sure why they went to all that trouble. Mark 25s came standard with a safety chain ring attached, right where that thing is screwed on….

            Long live American manufacturing!

That home-brew chain looks like a great idea for a boat with no handle or other place to attach the chain.

Clip-on safety chains used to be the norm for small outboards in case the transom clamps came loose, and I’ve know it to happen to neighbors here at the lake over the years. Maybe needed more when most people rented a boat and carried a motor in their trunk. I have a couple I still use. I tried to buy another one several years ago at a Marine dealer and the sales guy had never heard of them…..but today, most motors never leave the boat and are bolted on. I did a search for a safety chain at iboats.com and all that came up were trailer safety chains.
