how do you troubleshoot a merc o tronic 98? nothing looks burned or shorted….if i plug it in it does nothing! Is the light supposed to light? does it need the battery to work properly! Its getting voltage to the inside where it connects to the unit! Is there a transformer inside? please help

7 1/2 volt battery is needed to work all but the condenser checks. 1 914 310 7086.
I get a 7.2 volt battery for remote toys with charger. get as large of one as possible.

The first two items to check are the vibrator and the 10 ohm potentiometer. Over the years the contacts in the vibrator can become dirty or corroded. The unit can be carefully disassembled and cleaned. The potentiometer is also a point of failure due to dirty or burned contacts or wiper. Schematics for these units are difficult to find. you could probably hook in a 7.2v external source by using a power supply with a connector or plug interface . or stuff it inside space permitting

respect polarity , current needs and voltage rating.

if volts are a bit high you can wire in a couple of diodes to drop it (check diode specs for voltage drops& amps rating x diodes needed.)

For silicon diodes, the typical drop is 0.7 volts

The usual problem is the vibrator. The contacts become dirty of pitted. It can be carefully disassembled and cleaned. The other thing to check is the large 10 ohm potentiometer. They also have a tendency to get dirty and lose contact. Schematics for the Merc-o-Tronics are difficult to come by. The is an older discussion on the Smokestack antique engine forum you may find useful.

A few of us have used a 7.5 volt power supply such as this one to replace the battery.

The 110 volt power is only used for capacitor testing. All of the other functions use the 7.5 volt battery or power supply.

1.You REALLY need the instruction booklet.

Also NOTE…plugging it in does NOT work for testing coils….Unless you have converted it to run from a power supply.

                        Refer to statement #1

                        Regards
