When you do it, you get a master’s degree in water pump replacement. And patience. It is best if you have some special tools. Some guys have made their own, although I am not recommending that. Any short cut you try to take will end up biting you in the rear end; believe me. Like Dave said, get the manual, too. I own around thirty Mercury engines with this type of pump/transmission set up. The SHORTEST time I ever spent on one was nine hours, to truly do it right. But don’t let all this negativity bring you down. When they are right, they run well and are a pleasure to use. The unique transmission is something everybody in this hobby should experience. Don’t be afraid to ask more specific questions, if and when you proceed.

May I ask what a Mercury 10A is? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that model.

I did 3 of them.  The first and the last and the one I had to do over when it quit pumping after just sitting on the rack.  Had no instructions and made my own tools.  Some Merc dealers wouldn’t even touch them.

I have to admit, they were  an engineering marvel.

Ran a Mark 28A on a 12ft Aristocraft and loved it. ran a long time and traveled many miles in the Chesapeake Bay on a few weekends. Was not afraid of break downs.

When I started to work on my mark 28 that was on my rack for about 15 years, I did the water pump and found the locating pin for the impeller cup was missing. The special tools I picked up at auction and at the time, I had no idea what they were for.  Read the service manual and take your time pay attention to the springs and  pawls . I had success and so will you.

I’d always heard changing the impeller on one of these was a real PITA.   Now I’m fully convinced.    Somebody must have stayed up a lot of late nights to come up with this design!   But then again, I’ve heard they were great runners.
