Hi All, got the new parts installed and now have spark. The stator was bad, and so was the coil ! I have posted a few OHM readings from the new stator, and the replacement working coil (first coil picture) below. Please note that the new CDI stator has 2 wires vs. the original Merc’s one green wire. You just run the 2nd orange wire to ground. I am not an electrical wiz, so please just look at the ratings from the new stator, (old one didn’t register anything) and the good coil (actually a used coil from a 1970 7.5HP, that used the same part number) and use for reference when you try to diagnose a no spark problem with a 1970 – 71 Mercs with the phase maker ignition.
Regarding the coil readings, the good coil showed no continuity when the probes were held in the coil tower to both the + and – posts on the top of the coil. The bad coil pinned the needle.
Hope this helps any one with this series of Merc, as I found very little information on the net regarding the phase maker ignitions
