Mercury guys, We have a set of controls, should be about 1956. I would like to know a couple things about it. The control levers are both the same length. Should one be shorter for the gear shift? Both levers have the same part number on them. This unit has a spring detente on one leaver, I presume that would be the throttle. Should there be a spring detente on the gear shift also? The thing came to me in pieces and I would like to assemble it correctly.
thanks dale

March 21, 2017 at 7:42 pm #54670original was merc green the shift handle was aluminum with NO detent. the throttle was green with detent. both the same height. when assembled the shift handle would be toward the side of the boat and the throttle was toward the operator. no matter which side it was mounted on.

We have all the wiring for it, and we found a new plastic divider that goes between the handles. So the throttle was green and on the inside? Interesting! My son is building a glenL kit boat. Just a month ago he turned it right side up and is working on the decks and building a spot to mount these controls for our mark55. We hope to get it wet sometime this summer.
Thanks dale

March 22, 2017 at 10:59 am #54696The control box could also be black with a wrinkle finish from the factory. The beauty of these controls is that both levers move the cables in the same direction so you can use the outside lever for the throttle if it works better in your boat.
We should also mention that the throttle detent on these controls isn’t great. The detent won’t work well if the drilled holes in the detent contact area have an arched slot worn into them. Use the side with the least amount of wear for the detent.
