hey guys . need your help again . i had to split the tank on my kd3 . it had a crack to be welded . what is the compound between the 2 halves ? it seems like some type of furnace cement . not a gasket . any ideas ?

There are differing opinions. I have use Seal All and Felpro Karropak Tan Fiber Sheet gasket material on a number of tanks. If the two mating
surfaces are rough or uneven, it may also be a good idea to lap then
so the gasket will be clamped evenly and seal.
Be cautious when removing fasteners and/or studs. Sometimes they
        break off…lots of extra work.
Lapping tank mating surfaces (flanges) is pretty straight forward…coat
flange with felt marker (I use lay out dye) and rub on 220 grit wet or dry
until marker or dye are rubbed off and entire surface is then flat
        and level.
Others have their methods which may be easier and better.
