My new to me KD4 started right up and ran good but won’t pump water. Checked water pump and it has the solid rubber impeller. Its worn bad in center hole and won’t wobble . Is this type impeller available what are my options , can it be converted to impeller with blades ?
August 7, 2018 at 2:50 am #80760KD4 rope plate starter model was offered in 1946. The oscillator is correct for that year and model. All you need to convert is 3 slit water pump housing, impeller drive hub and vane type impeller. Remove prop shaft gear assembly from present water pump housing and install in 3 slit water pump housing to maintain gear match up. Be sure to reinstall shims ahead of gear. Cover, spring, clutch are same. Make new sheer pin from 3/16" brass rod
to fit notch in clutch disc. Round off ends for easier installation.
See current edition of Antique Outboarder for impeller adaption
how to article.
3 slit vane type water pump were used on KD4S,KD3S,KE3,WD4S,WD3S, WF4 andWG4 so there should be no lack of housings. Replace oil seal on 3 slit housing if needed.Alternatively Brian Wilcox has been making rubber oscillator on exchange basis.
Louis’Note the rim of water pump housing has been broken out. if pin is bent , removal is not
always easy…a Dremel cut off wheel may be used to cut pin. Damage to pump housing
looks shoddy, but, pump still works.Cover has hole to fit pin of either of the oscillator pumps. Later cover design has a notch
in rim that allows use on an of the 3 water pump varieties.August 7, 2018 at 11:23 am #80764It is the rope plate model , some one installed new coil, points and condenser so I would like to use it. Thanks for all the good info. It is a 1946 serial # 120707 my dyslexia kicked in.
