Mercury KE-4 Recoil

I just finished putting together basket case KE-4, recoil binds up when I tighten tank down. Are there spacers that go under tank mounts? doesn’t bind hard but rope doesn’t return unless I loosen bolts. I was going to shim tank but just in case some parts are missing, rubber mounts or something before I do that.

Use washers if nothing else is available. Maybe include a hose bib washer for cushion. Got to have clearance.

Hi,

There are grommets in the front, and bushings in the rear, between the fuel tank protector rim and the fuel tank brackets. We have both if needed (please mention this in this thread, as I seldom login to see private messages).

Make sure you find out what has been rubbing.

Some other issues to mention:

The hole in the center of the metal plate on the bottom of the recoil was enlarged by Mercury in later models. I find motors where the flywheel nut seems to have been rubbing against that plate.

I think there are also different style flywheel nuts used by Mercury and some have taller heights.

Sometimes you find optional flat washers under the flywheel nut as well.
