Any tricks for torquing the flywheel nut on KE3 type with the star top? 40 ft/lbs. There is room to get a wrench underneath the star.

The Mercury Service Tool is easy way to remove or install starter ratchet nut. Not everyone has access to the right stuff. The lip on top of the flywheel makes hex on bottom of ratchet shielded. The rough and ready solution is to pad the jaws of pipe wrench and carefully apply best estimate of proper torque.

I believe reproductions of the tool were available at one time.  Those with skills, patience and access to a milling machine could make a passable copy of the tool.

I have had luck in the past, finding a large, conventional socket, that will fit over the ratchet nut in such a way as to grip it enough to torque the nut. It ain’t pretty but it works. Don’t ask me what size I used, because it’s been a long time since I torqued a KE3 or Mark 5 flywheel….I don’t currently have one, but a large 8-point socket would likely be ideal.

          Long live American manufacturing!

OK, I’ll be using the pipewrench method / my largest socket was just a bit small.

            ONE MORE QUESTION

Should there be a washer or lockwasher under the flywheel nut? There wasn’t one when i took it apart and there is no diagram in the Merc service manual for this model/ just a reference to torquing it ( in the general powerhead section), then removing the nut adding a lockwasher and then torquing it again. Puzzling.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
