      I have a 1951 Mercury KG7,

It has the original rope in it for the recoil, but the handle is thrashed.

I’ve been debating replacing the handle, which I will most likely do.

However, would it be good practice to replace the rope as well? The current rope looks fine.

On my KF7, the original rope looks like it wore a hole through the tank, and as a result, it leaks.

      Any ideas?

      Thanks, Aidan

The original cotton covered cable can sometimes be found to be still in good condition.  As a purist, I would heave it in, but you need to keep a watch on it.  If the cotton ever fails the exposed cable will do serious damage quickly.  The replacement braided nylon type are nicer to use and not problematic but not as original.

That’s what happened with my KF-7. The cotton failed and the cable essentially sawed through the side of the tank where the rope comes out. I’ll just keep a close eye on it

repair the hole in the tank use J-B weld to fill all groves and make the rope hole smooth again. use a new replacement rope from mercury and all will be good again.

DONT USE THE WIRE ROPE EVER!
