All,
Continuing saga… Had the LE dropped to fix the shifting synchronization issue. Seems to be working correctly now. Here’s a couple of related issues.
1. While inspecting the LE, noticed where a 1/2″ or so diameter pipe from top-end needed to fit into hole in LE on reassembly. No issue slipping this into place with a little fiddling, however, we did notice that the round rubber gasket on the LE was rather beat-up looking. Is this critical to replace? I assume this is a water line. Are such gaskets available? Would/could this affect cooling efficiency?
2. Again cooling related… While the LE is down, is it fairly easy to check out water pump, ie. impeller, etc. Our focus was to fix shifting which we did, however, an overall question in our mind is whether engine is cooling properly.
3. After correcting shift issue and reinstalling LE, we were ready to crank motor to test (in a barrel). Top covers off. Engine would not start. We were surprised since engine had started previous to correcting shifting. In cranking motor, we noticed quite alot of fuel dripping from at least the top carb and maybe both. It was a bit alarming so obviously we quit. First of all, wondering why engine wouldn’t start? Then secondly, did we do something to cause carbs to leak? Engine may have fired a time or two. Is this related to anything? See attached pix. There seems to be some kind of link between throttle and shift rod. In the lower part of engine compartment is the upper shift rod end. There are two notches on it that appear to interact with the throttle in some way. If you enlarge the pix you will see that the throttle linked plate is sitting above the shift lever. Is this correct or did we miss something in putting it back together? Does this have anything to do with carb leakage?
