What are your plans for your Mercury motor? Both the KG 7 Super Ten Hurricane and the Mark 20 are great motors. The Mk 20 obviously being the later, more modern incarnation of the KG 7. The KG 7 has no gearshift and an integral fuel tank. It’s as simple as they come as far as fixing and maintenance goes. The MK 20 has a full gearshift and a separate fuel tank with a two line pressure tank. The pressure tank can be converted and a fuel pump added but the two line set up is fine as long as it’s in proper working order. If you’re looking to power a race boat or light hull the Super 10 is ideal. If your looking to have a more family friendly fishing/pleasure boating set up then the MK 20 will better serve you. There are more pros and cons for either motor as others will surely chime in and point out. Perhaps you should just buy both motors and enjoy each one in its best setting. If you stay in the hobby long enough you’ll likely own both models at some point anyway. This hobby has a funny way of preventing you from owning just one of any particular outboard once it gets into your blood. Good luck. Let us know what you decide.

I have a 14 foot Cadillac and a 12 foot StarCraft looking for a motor that I can get three people on plane with and have fun at the lake or two people with all of our fishing gear I have a mercury mark20h that is on my hydroplane but it is a short shaft with no tiller handle and no gearshift the biggest motor that I have other than that is a 12 hp Goodyear Sea-bee it’s like a tugboat engine when there’s three people

I’d pick the Mark 20 out of the two of them because the bigger prop and gear shift make it more suitable to the Cadillac. But like has been said, the Mark 20 in OEM trim is a double hose motor that needs a special fuel tank. It can be converted to single hose but Mercury has already done that for you if you get a Mark 25. A Mark 25 is also a little more civilized, having rubber vibration isolation mounts.

            Long live American manufacturing!
