Working on a 1979 25hp longshaft Evinrude. Finally got it back together. Then I noticed that the spacer 0324455 was still sitting on my bench. That little bugger did not jump in the lower unit when I was putting it back together. Is it needed? Seems to just cover the driveshaft. Do I need to pull the lower unit off and put it on?
      Thanks in advance
      Bob

Yes, said spacer, helps prevents exhaust gases from entering the water pump housing and displacing water going up to the power head to cool it off. Something like that. Someone will come along set me straight if my beer from the barbecue has polluted my thinking. So, yes please drop the lower unit and put the spacer back on. Part number 114.

        Cheers,

        David T.

Yeah, that spacer must be in place to seal the water pump properly.

In years past, the drive shaft and bottom end of the crankshaft were exposed to exhaust, hot water, steam, acids from combustion, and other nasties. That caused rust and wear of the shaft splines, crankshaft seal, and problems with exhaust gasses getting into the water pump, etc. It was a very good thing when they began isolating the shaft from the exhaust by running it in an enclosing cast-in tube. That spacer you left out is part of that system, and needs to be in there. Without it, exhaust blows up the tube, causing the very problems it is supposed to be preventing.
