      1958 Johnson 10 HP

Made an accomplishment with help from others 😎
Checked and resealed lower gear housing. All parts inside were very clean and no rust.
Replaced water pump and did a test and pumping well.
In preparation to attach the lower end, I saw where I should use BRP Moly Lube on the top of the drive shaft (above the o-ring).
My water pump kit did not come with lube.

I do not have Moly Lube that it calls for. Is there an alternative that could be bought local? I tried the local boat place – not much help. I see that I can order it, just thought there must be something else??

Well,, they didn’t specify moly lube back in “The Day”, and motors survived this long on water resistant grease for the splines. Except when people left the o-ring off. That spells disaster.

I think moly lube came out later, for use on higher hp outboards, because of it’s WEAR resistance, not so much it’s corrosion resistance. Later, it was decided to call for it across the board. Frank is, as always, right….any good water resistant grease should be fine. If you just have to have moly lube and know a Yamaha outboard guy, ask him for some WR #2. I am no chemist but it sure looks exactly like the old moly lube, to me; and it is used on Yamahas for the same purpose….

I have been using John Deere corn head grease in early lower units and everywhere else
You can only get it at a John Deere dealership
