      Hello,
Went to a swap meet last weekend. Came home with a MS39 Johnson, 4 Handitwins, and a 10A2 Neptune. All need work, figured they would be next winters projects. However MS39 has captured my attention. It has 68 lbs compression, lots of spark. Spark was jumping from plug wire in several spots. Replaced wire and got a couple of fires out of it , however it made a noise sounding like metal to metal from flywheel when it fired. Found a cracked flywheel. Now I am trying to locate a flywheel. Anyone out there have one?
Also looking for information on this motor. What is the aluminum plug located below the head for?
I was told that someone is making tanks and spark plug covers for this motor. Haven’t found much info online.
Any information or advise would be appreciated.
      Rob

I’m no MS39 expert, although I do have one. Like most little engines, they are often found internally worn out, because they have to be run full blast just to stay pointing in the right direction in a gentle summer zephyr. Sometimes mine will start and sometimes it won’t. It will flood easily, which I guess is why it has the spring release choke. It will never start in a million years if I don’t have the carb needle adjusted to exactly 5/8 of a turn out from lightly closed. When I was a kid, I made a spark plug cover for mine, out of fiberglass, based on a picture and soldered the cracks in the tank until the cows came home. I would rather buy better reproductions too, if available.

        Long live American manufacturing!

          Contact Doug Penn
he is in the listing and advertises in the Outboarder. He may have the parts u r looking for or reproductions.
Also look for Art Decalb who may have castings.
