I wouldn’t normally buy 40hp motor – too heavy for this old guy – but for $50, I couldn’t resist. Complete 1968 Johnson motor with wiring and remote throttle/shift unit. Appears to be a low hours motor in good shape for 53 years old. Turns over, has compression – that’s about all I know so far. I needed another project!

At only $50, that looks like a great find! Hopefully, you’ll have it running in short order.

Yeah I’ve had several of them in the past and they’re not as thirsty as my old Sportfour 60hp. I really have no use for the motor so I’ll get it running and sell it. I just enjoy working on them. Preserving the old iron.

Outboards keep you young, all that “thinking” and tinkering, …….. until you go to lift them!

I see wires hanging out the front — is it electric shift ? If so, the solenoid coils in the lower unit are not tolerant at all to moisture — I would test those before any other item on the motor — not sure how easity it is to find replacements .

This is a manual shift engine. Looks to be in real nice condition also

Yes manual shift. I drained the oil – no water. I then pressure tested the gearcase and she held fine. No seals to replace. I broke off one of the small studs on the starter solenoid in my attempt to clean up all the wires/connections. So once the new solenoid arrives I should be able to turn her over and get a compression reading. If it’s got good compression, I’ll attack the flywheel. I hate these 40’s with their 105 ft/lb torqued flywheels – always a challenge.
