Well I finally got a new starter solenoid and the starter works great. However top cylinder compression is only 95psi. Bottom is 110psi. I sprayed some Deep Creep and fogging oil in cylinder – see if that loosens up the rings. If not I guess a head gasket is the next step. On the positive side, strong spark on both cylinders.

Got the compression up to 106psi. I’m going ahead and change the impeller and rebuild the carb. Anyone know part number for a carb Kit?

Carb kit is OMC 439075 or Sierra 18-7024. The Sierra kit, however, does not include a new float.

Heh Heh – yes the 40hp weighs about 140 lbs. I’ll bet the cover is 20 lbs. Any $50 find is a steal nowadays. I remember about 20-25 years ago finding $50 motors all the time.

The cover for that 40 doubles a a life boat.

Not to change the subject But do these 40 horse Evinrude/ Johnsons from the early 1960’s and later use considerably more gas than than the 1950’s 25 to 35 horse model big twins?

My buddy was head of the propeller and engineering at OMC he had worked for Mercury in the early sixties he said they took the hood of one of the biggest OMC motors and plugged all the holes to make it water proof .They put a 5 year old kid in the hood and took a picture of the kid paddling the hood on the lake. They mailed the pictures to OMC for a laugh.

Well, I changed the impeller, rebuilt carb and fired her up. Started immediately! And idles good. However she’s not pumping water. I removed the thermostat cover, and no thermostat. Started her up but no water getting to the thermostat chamber. Not sure where the problem is at this point but at least she runs. I ran some wire down the inlet but that seems clear. Probably time to pull the lower unit again.

Rookie mistake – leg not deep enough. Raised the water level (had to raise the drum) and she pumps fine. However the head is VERY hot – hot enough to boil water. So I pulled the head and all the passages are clean as a whistle. So I’m stumped. This motor has another cover over the head – not sure what that’s all about. Could that have anything to do with the cooling problem?
