      It used to be my experience that Big Twins and RDs did not like to pump water in a barrel. I felt like they were getting too much exhaust in with the cooling water, or something. I found many times, that those engines would overheat in a barrel but work just fine on a boat. After a good number of hard learned lessons, I just gave up trying to barrel-run those engines.

        I did some checking and it looks like the thermostat must be installed to get any water circulation through the head. Without it the valve in the bottom of the housing which feeds water to the head remains shut, so water just bypasses around the head. I ordered a new thermostat.
