Hello, I just acquired an outboard motor for my sailboat.
The dilemma is that the title stats it is a 1932. My research shows otherwise. The model I have doesn’t show anywhere I have looked, aside from peoples posts.
Montgomery Ward
Sea King
Model: 94GG9003A
Serial#:349208
I understand that it is a 1949, but there seems to be no A listed only B for the last designation.
I need all the info I can get for this motor. I want to maintain it and use it. It is in great unrestored condition. The tank is even dent free.
I have been working on cars my whole life and feel that this is well within my grasp to handle. I already signed up for membership. It has sat for many years with no gas in it so no varnishing that I can see. Is there a good source for parts? I understand the impeller/rotor is a problem child? Are there any gaskets that cant be made using gasket material?
Thanks for any help you all can offer with information.Miya

quote Miya:Model: 94GG9003AOdd, "The Old Outboard Book" shows:
84GG9003A as 1948-49 (equivalent to Gale 1W5)
and
94GG9003B as 1949-50 (equivanent to Gale 1W10)http://richardlpaquette.ca/vikingmanuals.htm
has a link for a parts catologue (Viking was a Canadian brand!)
for C1G10, which should be very close (except for cosmetics) to the later of the two,
(and possibly for either, unless the magneto changed to "OMC Universal" in 1949).The six-digit part numbers should look as OMC/Evinrude/Johnson parts at on-line retailers and Evinrude dealerships.

Your model # 84GG90003A and serial # makes it a later 1948 model (349208). If it has not been molested .It should have a carb metal adjustment knob (black) if the paint is not worn off. If it has a plastic black knob it got thru the assembly line before they changed. I have some earlier ones , 200447. a couple in the 250,000 range. Flying Scott makes the impeller , about $ 20 ppd.

Edit
I happen to have all 8 varieties in my collection:
Evinrude Sportsman 4425
Ward’s Sea King
Spiegel Brooklure
Atlas Royal
Gale Buccaneer
Gamble’s Hiawatha
Goodyear Sea Bee
Eaton’s Viking
One way to tell at a glance if your 1.5 horse Gale is a 1948 or a 1950 is to locate the fuel shut-off valve. The earlier models have the valve located well aft while the 1950 valve is about the middle of the tank fore & aft. Also, there is a difference in the exhaust between the 2 years. There are lots of variations in the tank.
Of all the motors under the AOMCI umbrella of interest, these are perhaps the best for a novice to get his feet wet. They are plentiful, with a good supply of parts motors also. They are easy to work on. And they generally run quite well when put back together. With just some basic skills and a rattle can, they can be real purdy (especially Brooklure, Royal and SeaBee) if you like to restore motors.
August 19, 2016 at 9:11 pm #42367Unfortunately, I lost the pictures that go with this one. But there were differences in the decals, etc.
August 19, 2016 at 9:32 pm #42368Okay my 48-49 tanks do not resemble the posted picture. They ones pictured are like the Goodyear Sea Bee and Atlas"Royal." Also my motors are pristine and only have smaller Sea King side lettering.
August 22, 2016 at 9:03 pm #42510Mine has small letters on the tank and the petcock is to the aft of the motor. The motor is silver. The knob is metal and black.
MiyaAugust 22, 2016 at 9:24 pm #42513Your motor should be a maroon color the tank, the motor, carb cover . From the motor down to the prop it can be off-silver. Otherwise it has been molested in some ways and without YOUR pictures , just shooting in the dark. The tank pictured is NOT a 48-49 tank. Montgomery Ward and Gambles Hiawatha had identical tanks with the raised point going down the tank backside to a point in the rear middle.
August 22, 2016 at 9:33 pm #42518I will post a picture once I have the tank back on. I took it off to replace the rubber washers under the tank.
