January 30, 2016 at 5:30 pm #31079I do like the JW lightwin motors and have had a soft spot for that style 5.5 Johnson’s
January 30, 2016 at 5:35 pm #31080Motors look so much better when they are in a warm and dry storage area!
Uhhh, if you don’t mind me asking, but what are you doing on lake bottoms to find these gems?
January 31, 2016 at 12:06 pm #31101^^^^^^ Ohhhh….I see some home made SCUBA gear in Mumbles future^^^^^^^
January 31, 2016 at 3:24 pm #31105it all started scuba diving in the local michigan lakes, i grabbed an old what looked like a 2X4 stuck in the bottom buried in the silt, as i pulled on it a 1954 5hp hiawatha(made by gale) came out of the silt still stuck to the old wooden transom, buried in the silt at 35 feet down the lack of oxygen preserved it ok, when we brought it to the surface the change of pressure cause gas to spew a tiny stream out of the vent in the gas cap, i knew nothing about outboards mechanically as my scuba partner said you could never get that running again, well with the help from this site she was running in a month. not long after that we found a 1959 westbend air cooled, runs like a top once again thanks to this site. this is what started this sickness, the only reason i have not restored those 2 to original is because i wanted to practice on the johnson’s and evinrudes where the paint and decals were much easier to get, love the look of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s motors, the motors pictured were not found in the lakes, just really like the looks
dave
ps, nice honda, i also restore 40’s and 50’s ford tractors and one john deere 50/w no.9 sickle bar mower
look forward to getting back in the swing of outboards -
