Wow. Amazing information. Thanks!
The gearcases won’t interchange, so I need to either find a double-wall gearcase or possibly transplant new internals into the one I have. I’ll also need an electrical box. It will come together….

October 5, 2016 at 11:57 pm #45272The electrical boxes are rare (in good condition).
I see them on E-Bay between 35 and $85.
It will be MUCH cheaper (and more reliable) to make your own wiring harness
and enclose it in a black nylon loom (sealed on the ends with shrink tube)
also, eliminate the harness Quick Disconnects – they are not needed.
and, use a "marine" type solenoid – not the automotive type.and your plan will come together !!
Ten Bucks on E-Bay with free shipping.

October 6, 2016 at 1:24 am #45278I ordered that book. Cheaper than the one I’d found. Thanks again.
The motor has a harness cable coming out, about five feet total length, with two battery cables, maybe #4, and a connector with seven of what looks like 1/4" female spade connectors captive in it. Are these the "quick disconnects" you are talking about?

October 6, 2016 at 3:11 am #45287yes – – – somewhere back on the engineer’s drawing board,
someone thought those Big Twins would be taken on and off
the boats frequently – – – subsequently, the quick disconnects.
Now, if you do not plan on this event, it is prudent, but not period correct,
to eliminate them…. I have seen 5 of the quick disconnects and have 3 sets in a box.
all the wires and pins are toast. No way would I run 12v high amps through them.
but – your motor – use your own best judgement on how to proceed.
Just sharing some thoughts on the subject.October 6, 2016 at 5:06 am #45293The one on the right looks like a pin-and-sleeve connector. The one on the left looks different (?). In any case mine has a different setup. The harness is continuous and I think it must have plugged into a box containing a starter solenoid and some other stuff. If there was a generator did its regulator have a separate box? I’m comfortable with electrical work but have never had an outboard with wiring before. OMC definitely did not skimp on the gauge of wiring.
