I got this rig in a pile of Martin parts and motors years ago.  These were said to be parts from a Martin dealer who went out of business (as most did).  What’s the purpose of this gizmo? Break in a new set of points?

Back in the very olden days, they used to “run in” a rebuilt engine.  Really doesn’t apply to a Martin, but who knows?

Is “run in” like “break in?”  Could this be used to break in a new set of rings?  Come to think of it, wouldn’t these pistons want to be oiled if this thing was going to run for a while?

Maybe to test used spark plugs.

Whatever it is, they didn’t want that powerhead turning over very fast. Maybe 400 RPM here?

Johnson used to spin their powerheads before shipping them out. A preliminary break-in done at the factory.  I’ve done it to, using the lathe while feeding the motor lots of fogging oil.
