I have a gear case from a RD-17 25 hp that the halves were left open for who know how long. #@%&!
Of course all the gears are rusted
I would like to save the gear case because the halves are a match
Beside heat and penetrating oil would suggest do you have to get the race out.
What “tool/punch” should I use to hit it from the opposite side
I’m betting someone has some trickNovember 13, 2020 at 3:57 pm #220778Universal way “when there is no other way” is heat the aluminum case around the race, then thunk the case on your wooden workbench top. If everything goes as planned, it will fall out. Otherwise, I
think a slide hammer puller will work.November 13, 2020 at 4:06 pm #220783As Frank noted, heating the case and then knocking it on your workbench will often cause the race to just fall out. On my RD-18, I heated the area around the race then knocked the race out from the top side using a long piece of 3/16″ steel rod as a punch – popped it out with 2 easy taps. Don’t know if your RD-17 is exactly the same but in this picture you can see a slot at the front and back of the case that allows access to the top of the race to knock it out.

I’m going to try to talk my neighbor to weld for meNovember 14, 2020 at 6:21 am #220819Welding a bead around the inside of the race Will shrink the race and it may just fall out , If it doesn’t tack a frost plug or disc that fits inside the race then tap out with a rod from the top side
I over the years I have removed many valve seats from aluminum heads this way -
