      Hi guys,

One of our members who has not been able to figure out how to login to our web site is trying to sell an outboard motor part on eBay that he refers to as a Martin "720" outboard motor face plate. When I commented that the part is not for a Martin outboard motor, he then asked me what it fits. Embarrased, I had to admit that I do not have a clue.

OK, here is your assignment. Please look at the following eBay auction: https://www.ebay.com/itm/382289977237?ul_noapp=true . Does anyone know what outboard motor this cast aluminum lower cowling/face plate belongs to? Please let me know what you think so I can pass the information on to the seller. Thanks for your help.

I’m pretty sure that is a West Bend-made Elgin faceplate/carburetor cover for about a 5HP. Hard to tell what exactly it would fit since many parts were interchangeable across different models and years.

Thanks for the feedback, JP. If you see a photo of a similar motor with the face plate on it, please let me know. I was hoping I would be able to show our fellow member a parts list page of a photo of a motor to show him what he has. Any other takers out there?

            Hi Tom,

Looking at the pictures closer, that is the carburetor cover that fit many years of the 7.5HP. It was also used on some of the 5, 5.5, 6, and 7 HP models, but those HPs were also sold with a smaller version of that cover. Here is a picture of a 7.5HP with the same cover your friend has, but with the proper Elgin green paint job. There is only one slight variation, this one has a hole for the fuel petcock on the port side.

Thanks JP. I think you have it narrowed down for us. I have only owned one Westbend-built Elgin in my collecting days and it is a 1.25hp that does not have a lower cowling like that one. Again, thanks for your help.
