Have old Evinrude 4 cyl oppossed motor…4859 12111 … ??? WHAT IS IT ??? 1 coil lead puts out juice … all others dont feel a thing.
At First… thought it was weak magnats… Nope …feels strong pulse when cranking. Anyone have extra coils for Sale ??
How do you test for bad coils? Managed to get 3 other project motors to fire .. Happy Day for me.

It may be an Evinrude Zephyr made in 1940-41. The model number on that one is 4359. It’s 5.4hp motor.

Hello cb, ohmmeter resistance readings will be very low for primary coil resistance with the points open of about 1ohm to ground. You can test this without disassembly. The secondary readings will be about 8k or 8 thousand ohms and that will be measured from lead to lead on the top cylinder, same for the bottom cylinders. No or high reesistance to ground. It sounds to me like one lead is shorting to ground on the one that is firing. The other could have poor connections in the points, standard troubleshooting rules apply.
