My elderly Dad (102yrs) passed away in March. He had a collection of 7 Vintage Boat Motors. 6 we can identify because of the Names and Model Numbers on them, but the oldest has nothing on it to identify what Brand, Year, HP.

      DESCRIPTION

The Steering Arm has 4 positions that tilts the prop in 4 up and down positions.

The tank is Red (if original color).

      It has a single cylinder.

It has a Pull Cord for starting but also has a Threaded Hole maybe for a Crank Handle

Has 2 Air Valves on Carb.

      Not Geared.

The Midsection and Lower Unit appears to be all Brass.

      The Motor is not seized.

Any Information on this Motor would be appreciated and its Rarity and Value (as is) would be appreciated.

        Hi
Its a Caille outboard , the so called "5-speed motor" or "Rowboat Motor"
        year of production around 1919 – 1925 ( my guess )
earlier models had the name Caille on the muffler and later there are sometimes studs on the tank
        for a starter device.
You miss the wooden knob on the flywheel, that is replaced for a rope sheave.
        that’s all from my side

Like kees said a Caille 5-speed Row Boat Motor, Made in Detroit. Looks like you have a pretty complete unmolested example. For more info and pictures search Jack Craib’s Caille web site.

              It’s a Caille 5-speed rowboat motor.

Goman, my Dad was born 1913 and per what Jack Craib says it looks like it was Mfgd. probably 1916 to 1918 but with more Pics he will try to narrow it down. This Motor was either from his youth or came from his father. I have never seen it in use.

I would like to thank all for the quick identification and remarks of this Vintage Caille.

Kees, as this Motor is from my Dad’s Estate, the family will decide whether it will remain in the family or try to sell it.

The first gas powered American outboard (1896) was the American. It also had a variable pitch propeller. Only 25 were built.

The first Waterman "Porto" (1908) used a modified Curtis motorcycle engine. Mt.Waternan contracted the Caille brothers (who had a reputation for there fine castings) to cast parts for his improved motor. Caille decided they could build a better outboard, and so they did. There 5 speed Rowboat motor incorporated a variable pitch propeller. Some (around 1915) came with an optional Evinrude magneto. They were also the first to offer an optional auto rewind starter.
                      early model

                      later model
