They are a good motor . fuel pump is a hard job. you have the shift knobs that is a +++++++++++++
May 19, 2022 at 11:55 am #260091Is that the Silent Six? Those are nice running motors if in good shape,
but harder to work on than an OMC.Prepare to be boarded!

May 20, 2022 at 5:36 am #260127Very nice running motors and fast for a 6, on a light boat. Also one of the most frustrating-to-work-on engines that you will EVER find. I personally think they are harder to deal with than the automatic transmission Mercs.
BIG, BIG failure point on those, just like Mark 5s…..Gear case is very light duty and prone to water intrusion. What happens very often, is that backwards pressure is built up in the gear case, from bad bearings, ice, hard use, etc., and will push the prop shaft bearing carrier out slightly to the rear, breaking off about an eighth-inch ring of the gear case’s aluminum. Since it’s small, if you’re not looking for the problem, you won’t even notice that it’s missing; and it makes the gear case toast.
On the plus side, that one seems to have two good shift knobs. They are usually broken. Minus side, the front plastic emblem is broken, no surprise there. If it turns over with bounce and the gear case is not broken, I’d say it was worth as much as a buck and a half, but nowhere close to $350.
Long live American manufacturing!

May 20, 2022 at 9:16 am #260133Billw. thanks for the heads-up on a possible nightmare…. the seller declined my generous offer ….above $1.50 🙂
I was on the dark side for several years witn my first 9.8 late 60s and a 20hp which punched a hole inthe crankcase , a merc 500 and a Merc 45 hp Classic 50 (both fantastic motors)
my 75 ETEC runs great ..since 2005 as does my 9622a since 1966 !! so I,ll stick with OMC BRP stuff 🙂
