My father in law was a tinkerer who recently passed away.He left behind a large collection of outboard parts and a couple of (more or less) complete motors. Most of it is for Johnson/Evinrude 40hp motors of around mid 60’s vintage. He had a friend that ran a scarp yard when aluminum prices were so high so a lot of people scraped them and he bought up several old motors to piece together some running a couple of running engines.

So we in the process of cleaning up his shop and trying to determine if there is a market for any of parts for these engines? I did a quick search on EBay and was surprised at few parts I saw for sale which seems to indicate there isn’t much demand. I have dealt with old cars and inboard boats most of life but outboards are just not my expertise. We are just about to start sorting the parts out and would really appreciate any advice anyone could offer.

We have a lot of scrap metal to be recycled but we don’t want to scrap anything that is useful. Thanks in advance!

Would be a shame to scrap the parts before one of us has a chance to go through and help you determine what is scrap and what can be put back into service or used to help someone get one back into service.
Post your location and set something up and thanks for giving us a chance before scrapping.

Yeah, some of the stuff could be valuable, but it will take some work to sort through everything. Like Pappy says, post your location, perhaps some local members can help you evaluate good stuff and pay scrap for the rest.

Sorry, I knew location was important. Located in North Alabama near Guntersville on the Tennessee River.

We are just starting on his barn, just finished up a small storage shed. Most of what I have seen appears to be engines he has torn down. I have not seen much in the way of lower units. There are a couple that I know are not 40hp units, they are are smaller and maybe older.

The plan is separate the boat parts, from the chainsaw part, etc before we do anything with them. We will have a better idea of what is there and if nothing else can post photos.

I restored a shop full or very old woodworking machines and I know how important one missing part can be. That is why I wanted to reach out before we did anything and of course if I can make a little money for his window that is plus too.

If no one is able to come and help you evaluate what you have you can post some pictures here. If you have a problem doing that you can email them to me and I’ll get them on here for you. sdpiazza@aol.com
