Memory is vague at this point but I believe it wasn’t a Torx; but rather, a 5/16" 12 point socket. I had a deep, impact socket that I ground a bit to fit in the tight spot between the rod and the bolt head. These bolts are TIGHT. Don’t expect to find something at Harbor Freight that is going to loosen them or even Craftsman. You are really going to want a Snap-On, Mac or something like that….If you loosen them with anything less, then you will just be very lucky.

Like anybody else, I have gone through (and broken) my share of sockets. (5/16" 12 point) The thing is, they have to be thin wall. Right now I have a Snap-On and a Craftsman in my toolbox, both of which have survived the task a number of times.

I think I rounded out about three craftsman before biting the bullet for a Snap On, which has lasted me practically my whole career. Not that I did rebuilds ever day but I did a fair number.

Mac use to make a Johnson outboard socket just for that purpose. (Not Evinrude, just a Johnson name brand, weird!) Anyway they lasted real well, but alas they would finally split after many years of powerhead rebuilding. With a rod torque of 32-34 ft lbs on the rod bolts that’s a lot of strain on a thin wall socket. It was a black hardened socket. About 1 1/2" long. They always warrantied them well. You don’t see Mac tool trucks much anymore.
OMC made a Vortec socket especially for this purpose. It is tapered down to the end and works well, but they are proud of it. The number escapes me at the moment. They also have a 3/8" one for the bigger motors now.
For occasional use any of the top brand will work. Just take a rod with you to make sure it fits down inside on the head of the bolt.

YOU BOTH ARE RIGHT THE SOCKET IS A 5/16 12 POINT. I WAS ABLE TO BUY ONE AT ( LOWES ) AND IT BROKE THE BOLTS LOOSE
THE SOCKET IS MADE BY SK TOOLS
