I have a Neptune AA1A that I bought and have brought back to life. My question is there a outward water discharge that you can see ? I took the water outlet tube off and it shows a good stream of water flowing but it seems that the exhaust tube gets pretty hot is this normal ?
Absolutely – combustion is still happening in the upper part of that tube. The tuned exhaust on modern racing motors recovers some of this lost energy. Caution should be used in handling any "just run outboard". The muffler on most will run boiling hot.
The exhaust tube gets very hot from exhaust gases being shuttle out to near the foot of the gear case. Their are some tiny exhaust relief ports on the upper 1/3 of the exhaust tube that help with starting because the exhaust opening is under water near the foot.
There is no water discharge for you to look at, nor should there be. The weight of the water returning through the down tube equals the weight of the water going up through the up tube. In other words a siphon. If you drill any holes, you destroy the siphon system.
Thanks, I thought that was the case but most of the motors I have worked on have a external water outlet. I joined AOMCI a few months ago because of the help you guys provide on this site. I have 22 motors will the fever ever subside ? Thanks again.
