I’m going to strip and paint my Johnson outboards. Should I spent top dollar for the exact match paint or go with a cheaper paint? Thanks for your opinions.

Myself, I don’t cheap out on paint. Well, you usually do it the first time. Get it done, and be proud of your work. then fuel it up, have the fitting or carb leak, and have all your paint run down the leg of the motor leaving the primer.

        Then you smarten up.

My other thought is, we have these suppliers providing us with exact colour matched paint and decals. Why not support them.

I use http://www.nymarine.ca for my paint.

I hear effanaco is another good supplier. Havent tried them myself as they wont ship to Canada, but if you are in the US may be a thought.

I agree with Chris, I gave up on the rattle can spray paint some time ago. One other option is to see a good auto parts store who can color match paint. I used Oreilly Auto Parts locally to supply paint for a Chris Craft I recently did, and it turned out great.

If you spray lacquer or enamels, get a filter mask for your face with activated charcoal in it (Menards has them cheap). If you spray urethane paint, you need equipment to bring you outside air through a tube to breathe. You only get one set of lungs and they can’t be restored. Eye protection is also recommended.
