Hello all.
I just restored an old 14′ tin boat and a friend had an old outboard he gave me. It is a Montgomery Ward Sea King 3hp. Model 64GG-9005 Serial 41800. It is complete and appears to be in good shape. Turns freely. It has been sitting for years and had fuel in it so a carb rebuild is in order but I am having a heck of a time finding a rebuild kit. A quick look inside shows a need for float, gaskets, etc. Also figured I would go through the entire motor (impeller, electronics, gaskets, etc.) to make it safe and reliable but again, parts are difficult to locate. Was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I have already been told to not bother, just buy something newer but I would prefer to have a motor that is the same vintage as the boat. Cant tell you why, just seems like more fun. Already spent a year making the boat functional and looking good, don’t mind spending some time on the motor as well. Any help would be appreciated.
April 27, 2016 at 1:38 am #35545Shoot, no problem. There are about a zillion (well almost) of those things out there, still running. 1st, there is no such thing as a carb kit for it. You have to order, or make, your own parts. Some people reseal the old cork float, or if it is beyond hope, make a new one. Personally, I modify a Sierra Marine 18-7208 (Mercury) float. A couple of guys here make the water pump impeller, properly called a rotor.
I’ll post a parts list as soon as I get it loaded.

April 27, 2016 at 2:35 am #35550wow, talk about knowing the right guy. Thanks a bunch. I just pulled the lower end apart and realized it is not a traditional impeller but a eccentric rotor as you say. Appears to have grease in there instead of oil as well. I’ve worked on engines my entire life but never had an outboard and certainly not a really old one. It is just too interesting to not have on my old boat. What is the proper fuel mixture? Thanks again.
April 27, 2016 at 7:21 am #35555"Outboard Motor Grease" is what is called for. But it is no longer made. Most people use Lubriplate 105 "Motor Assembly Grease", available from NAPA Auto Parts, — OR– "Corn Head Grease", available from John Deere dealers. The Lubriplate comes in a handy squeeze tube, making it easier to get in. The seals they used back then are not good enough to hold oil, thus the need for grease.
Fuel mix is 16:1, which is 1/2 pint per gallon.

April 27, 2016 at 6:52 pm #35581Thanks for all the help everyone. I have several tubes of Lubriplate around the shop. I figured the fuel would be oil heavy but that is not what I would have guessed. I will look into the carb kits right now. Thanks again. I will post some pics when I get this thing running and on the water. Should be a looker. I plan on polishing a few pieces to match the polished tinny.
April 27, 2016 at 6:55 pm #35582Forgot to ask, what brand is the carb? Only identification I could find is a casting number 550324 J on the underside of the body. No name or identification tag. Looks similar to the other Gale numbers cast into components on the engine.
April 27, 2016 at 6:58 pm #35584Looking through my phone I realize I actually called Discount Marine yesterday. Nice guys but he told me they do not have any parts for motors prior to 1950. Thanks though.
April 27, 2016 at 10:20 pm #35602That carburetor is made by Gale/OMC and unique to the Gale motors. Well OK there was a similar Evinrude motor that was very related to Gale. So it is still a Gale carb.
