My new member packet arrived today and I have to say that I am impressed. The Antique Outboarder is super nice. I have only had time to read the article on retaining/growing membership but I am looking forward to checking the rest out soon.
I guess I don’t actually have any motors yet that qualify as antiques as most of mine are from the early 70s or late 60s. Though I do have a Neptune I haven’t researched yet. I guess it might be from the 50s. Still a little too young to make the cut. I want a ducktwin and one of those gorgeous Evinrudes from the late 50s, something in the 5-10hp range.
I am excited to be here. So much knowledge…

classicomctools@gmail.comMay 19, 2016 at 9:12 pm #36795Not to worry, we enjoy most all outboards here, they don’t have to be antiques. Hopefully you will find a nice late 50s OMC soon, parts are plentiful, relatively easy to work on, and a great way to start a collection.
May 19, 2016 at 9:15 pm #36797Welcome aboard! I live in TN, but I travel to & from MS often. Not thru Hernado, but have family up that way. Let me know if there is any old stuff you want as I have too much & looking to get rid of some. Just give me a shout out.

Welcome to the "Club". Lots of great people here with even more knowledge. Just hanging out with us here your motors will come. Trust me.
May 19, 2016 at 10:16 pm #36803Thanks guys. My personal story, for what it’s worth, in getting into working on these old motors is sort of comical. I have been in the outdoors since my father put me there back in the early 70s. I was around outboards before I was around bicycles. But, it took me buying one for a little Pelican boat I traded for to find out I enjoyed working on them. I looked at a 15 Evinrude a fellow had for sale a few miles away but walked away from it, even though he said it ran fine, because the carb was in a coffee can. He had the carb kit in there too and told me it was no big deal to install and replace. Well, I had not tried to repair an engine since shop class back in 1985 so I figured I should probably leave that motor and the coffee can where it was. As it turns out the fellow called me the next day after installing the freshly rebuilt carb and said it was running fine. I went back over to look again and it was running great though the price had gone up $100. Even so, I paid the man and took it home. I was checking it out at home on some muffs and discovered it would start and idle great but if you gave it any throttle at all it immediately shut down. After much staring and muttering I figured out the throttle cam was broken. I remembered at this point that the fellow I bought it from was revving the motor from the top of the carb. I didn’t know who to turn to to fix it so I got some help on another website and set out on my first repair. After a long struggle with the flywheel I finally got the new cam installed and everything buttoned back up. It ran great. Along the way I found out that I actually enjoyed figuring out why it wouldn’t run and fixing it about as much as I do fishing. That was the first one. I don’t know how many have come and gone since then but I have around 20 in the garage most of the time now. Most are mine. Others I fix for folks. I have a rack with 3 or 4 that are staying here. At least until I find something more interesting. …did I mention boats? Good grief the boats…

I will do that. It doesn’t really make sense considering how I love to go fast on the water but I have found that I enjoy the really small outboards the most. I have a little Evinrude Mate that is pretty much my favorite at this point. Some of the lakes I fish locally have HP restrictions and when I am there I clamp that little rascal down and putter all over the place. It’s the same year model as I am but is a bit quicker. 😀
