I would like to first say that i am new to the AOMCI and am very excited. i am not much of a motor guy not because i don’t like them but because i have never had the opportunity. i have joined AOMCI because i am curently building and Glen-L runabout and have the opportunity to buy a 1958 Evinrude Big Twin 35hp outboard. it does run and start up within the first few pulls but my question at this point is less about the motor i will get to that at a later day if i buy it haha but i need help with can i make the outboard a remote steer using the teleflex rotary cable? i love the look of the motor and hope so but i have no idea where to even start looking to find out. thank you to anyone who comments it is greatly appreciated and regardless if i get this motor or not i will buy a 50’s/60’s outboard so i look forward to interacting and reading posts.

March 25, 2022 at 10:02 am #256809It will work with the teleflex push-pull cable steering but not well. There will be problems with lack of full steering port to starboard, and there will be problems with engine tilt. Same goes for any other push-pull cable steering. The motor, like most others of that vintage, was designed to run with cable/pulleys steering. Still, there are/were thousands out there running with push-pull steering and people just put up with the drawbacks.
Really pains me to say this, but Mercury was the pioneer with thru-the-tilt-tube push-pull steering.

Here’s a couple links to some good reading about
reviving old motors.
The first is a compilation of articles by Max Wawrzyniak.
They are mostly about buying and reviving OMC outboards.

The next is pointers to reviving a motor that hasn’t
run in a while.

Good luck with your boat and motor.

March 25, 2022 at 5:00 pm #256817Welcome aboard Andy.
I have a 1957 35 hp Big Twin that I’ve been rehabilitating from many years of neglect. I’ll follow this thread and help where I can. My 14 foot Mark Twain runabout uses cable and pulley’s. I’ve never had a problem with them.

when I first started working on outboards.
This first link is pointers on reviving a motor
that has sat a long time.

The next is a series of articles about cheap outboard power.
It’s mostly about OMC motors.

Can someone tell me why I’m double spaced?

March 25, 2022 at 8:55 pm #256840Hello Andy and welcome! I guess I am your man when it comes to hooking up a Teleflex steering system. I am not fond of the old cable systems but they are period correct for some outfits. Your glenL will do great with a smooth quiet steering cable. BTY this is just my opinion and do what you want because there are plenty of people on this forum much smarter than me! Anyway I don’t know how handy you are so what I show you will depend on a few things you need to be able to do like welding. First and most important is you need a anchoring plate to hold the cable. That anchor needs to move in several directions. I used a tie rod end from an automobile on my first endeavor. I welded a piece of pipe to the head of the tie rod. That worked but, it needed a way to move up and down. So I made a modification and now it works very well. I am sending some pictures. I hope they help with your project. If you like to email me my address is in the members only section.
My son has built a glenL zipp. He did a great job on that outfit. I could send some pictures of that baby also.
