The AOMCI Council voted to not produce a calendar this year due to cost restraints. Our prime publication is the Antique Outboarder magazine. A number of years ago we voted to provide a calendar as an extra benefit, but with recent cost increases we cannot at present provide the calendar. If you read my Helm Message in the January issue you will understand. The January issue was mailed using what is termed a “self-mailer” by the printer, which should be a heavier (thicker) cover page, and the address printed on the reverse side. There have been numerous issues in the handling by the USPS and we will have to go back to a protective covering as previous. The self-mailer was tried as a cost saving item, but we are disappointed. The self-mailer was going to save us approximately $6,000 per year if it worked.

January 7, 2024 at 1:58 pm #283753Thanks for the explanation. As a new member I’m happy to see the International is sensitive to this type of input.
That said, mine arrived in perfect shape. After reading it it goes in the drawer, stacked neatly with the others. Some great info in some of those.
Best Regards

This was a well-intentioned idea that just didn’t work out. We all have them. I’m sure there will be other cost saving ideas out of necessity.
Our volunteers are in a tough spot right now. I’d like to thank the Executive Council for making the difficult, but necessary decisions to ensure the future of our club.

January 8, 2024 at 10:11 am #283778Saving our money is a good thing… perhaps with a little re-engineering this new mailing plan would work. I get a couple of other mags that come thru USPS sans envelope. One approach is a heaver stock “throw-away” second cover. The second cover carries the mailing address and even some extra advertising…. an opportunity for a bit of additional income.

As someone who tends to verify statements
that seem questionable, and was a printer for
35 years, if the club paid for a “heavier (thicker)
cover page”, you didn’t receive it as its exactly
the same thickness as the previous issue.

The pages look to be about .00025 thinner than the cover.
Cant accurately check it with what I have. Paper has a
weight specification based on 500 sheets. (ream)
While .00025 isn’t noticeable on one sheet its significant
when it comes to the ream weight specification. Besides
cost, there are any number of reasons to consider the
weight of paper to be used for a job.

January 9, 2024 at 12:47 pm #283808Everyone is looking somewhere that they can cut cost. Even my Corn Flakes box. I use to grab the box by the side and pour them in my bowl no problem. Now when I grab the box , it collapses in on itself. My truck tailgate is very light. I guess it’s made out of aluminum. I wouldn’t trust much weight on it. And if you notice, some of your breads are cut pretty thin. It is not just AOMCI trying to keep costs down, It’s the whole country.
