Hello all, new member in Northeast Wisconsin . I have a 1955 Crestliner Commander 12. Looking to re-power it with Mercury Mark30, Mark35, Mark50, Mark 55 or if I have to I’d also consider Mark 58. Control motors would be preferable. Electric start would be nice, however I could live without it. Boat is cable and drum steering. Cosmetics and running issues aren’t too big a concern as I’m willing to work on it. I’m looking for a complete motor that is serviceable. Any help is appreciated.

Any 4 cyl bigger than a mark 30 will be too big. I have run a mark 30 on my 12 foot commander (forward steering) and it’s as big as I’d go. If your steering is in the back cockpit, even the mark 30 will get squirrely on you. That boat is rated for 30hp. I’d recommend trying a mark 25 first. At 18hp+, it’s more than enough to push that boat into the upper 20s-lower 30mphs.

Right now it is set up for forward steering and the 18 evinrude I have does the 20 s to 30s, but speed being what it is…. have a 22 cubic inch 25 Johnson also (1970 that I’m replacing upper seal on) ran last season until seal gave out. But these are 60s and 70s I’d like 50s motor on it peppy as possible and have extra aerodynamic drag of a Bimini and the extra power can be there you just don’t have to use the throttle like a light switch.

I’d say give the mark 30 a try.

I have a few Mark 25’s for you, and controls. I live in Sheboygan. I am sending you a private message.
