I am reasonably familiar with early Kiekhaefer outboards with removable cylinders and water jackets. What other brands shared the same technology?
I was given a crankcase assembly at a meet Saturday
The crankcase has only a center bearing (no reeds)
The bearing is secured in place by 3 pins at 120 degrees around crankcase not single bolt as Kiekhaefer twins.
Kiekhaefer cylinders and water jackets fit well and bolt holes line up
Mercury KD4 crankshaft appears to be exact match except for a slight radius to ensure center bearing is installed right side up
Otherwise cranks are same and center bearing fits both.
It appears to be a motor not made by Kiekhaefer that follows Kiekhaefer design closely
enough to use Kiekhaefer parts.
I was told it might be a prewar Champion.
Thank

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

The crankcase looks much like a prewar Kiekhaefer twin but with external reeds like the
early Kiekhaefer singles. I do not believe it to be a Kiekhaefer product but it appears
I could make it a running motor using Kiekhaefer components.
With the solid center bearing each half of crankcase would function as a single cylinder
motor so it looks like it would need 2 carburetors or poppet valve fuel mixers…
without linkage to spark advance…Would be nice to find it to be an early Mercury
dual carb race motor LOL

May 1, 2017 at 7:11 pm #56952Is it possible it’s a prototype or experimental motor? Mercury was very big on modularity, so it doesn’t surprise me that a utility motor of some sort would use similar castings or parts off the shelf.
May 2, 2017 at 4:24 am #56978Louis try looking for a picture of a 1940′ K-4 Rocket 5.9 HP. I think that Model used external reeds like the K-1,2,and 3 did. Not sure how carb mounted to the reed covers. Definitely a Kiekhaefer motor. Just my guess
May 2, 2017 at 2:28 pm #56997It would fit a 1940 K4 Alternate twin Email me at mark78nut@hotmail.com and I will send you pics of the motor or its on U tube Pine tree boating club Stetson and Pinkham museum tour as for posting pics here the sites are not user friendly

Possible for you to detail which segment and approximate time?
