I’ve a new to me 33hp Evinrude dated to 1970. It shifted fine, but wasn’t pumping water and there was water in the gearcase oil so I stripped the lower unit down and changed all the seals. It was my first time doing this and trust me I watched a lot of youtube and i do have the service manual for this motor. Fun process, learned a lot, more to learn for sure.

After gearcase reassembly I pulled the shift rod and it latched into gear with a bit of force. Driveshaft and propshaft spun nicely by hand. But now it will not go back to neutral despite how hard I push on the shift rod.

The propshaft is the ‘drilled shaft’ type with the spring and two detent balls over which the clutch dog sits. I noted I couldn’t slide the clutch dog by hand with the balls clicked into place but wasn’t sure whether this was normal or not.

I’d appreciate any questions or advice anyone can offer. I can send pics if needed.

      Thanks!

OK, you replaced the seals, did you replace any of the shifting components, like clutch dog or gears? Sounds like you still have the gearcase off the engine, so that rules out any of the engine’s shifting linkage. You pulled the shift rod up and it went into forward, but now you can not physically push the shift rod back down into neutral…Do I have it right?
These shift rods with the ball/detent set ups are pretty tough to move by hand for sure. With the gearcase secured in some sort of fixture, I would put a piece of wood on top of the shift rod, then push it back down… Let us know what happens…

You have it all right. Gearcase off engine, no new partsf. The block of wood wouldn’t move the shift rod either.

I decided to dismantle it again as something obviously wasn’t right. Got my small parts tray out to recieve the bits I was about to pull off and noticed the threaded pin that the shift yoke pivots on, still sitting there in the bin, uninstalled…

Pin back in, shifts like it should. Embarrassing but I’ll take it.

Most times I’m not a bonehead. This wasn’t one of those times.

          Thank you for your response!
