Planning on trying three outboards out on the lake this weekend,
Johnson 100 & A-80, and the 1951 Gale 12 hp wedge head.
I found a chart showing the first two are 1/2 pt / gal
and assume the Gale is the same, but does anyone know
for sure?
Also, I can find no specs for the Gale’s spark plugs.
I put J8C in it as I was out of J6C plugs. Anyone know?
Thanks!Prepare to be boarded!
September 6, 2018 at 10:40 pm #82362Run them all at 16:1 and don’t worry about it 🙂

September 7, 2018 at 2:39 pm #82395I think the Gale does call for 16:1 also.

September 20, 2018 at 3:44 am #83254I have a Gale 5D10 5hp from Goodyear and believe it uses 24:1 ratio.
I would think the 12hp would use the same. Not sure.Just got this engine so it would be good to find out.

September 20, 2018 at 7:29 am #83259Fact: The Gale 1951-1963 factory service manual says 24:1 for all models. However, the manual was revised in the early 1960’s and the original specs may have been different. Personally, I would use 16:1 in that 12hp. That’s a big engine for aluminum connecting rods.
But I resolved long ago not to get into oil debates, and here I am (again).
September 21, 2018 at 1:19 am #83297Frank your not debating. You are Educating the Un-informed folks who would trash that engine with the wrong Oil-Gas Mix. There are those that are easily led astray by the 50:1 or 100:1 line of thinking.
September 21, 2018 at 3:50 pm #83319I second that for Franks oil info. As Frank said the manual was revised, so if you have a manual and don’t know about the revision, then you are using the wrong ratio.
Don’t know where we would get the info if it wasn’t for a few of the scholars on this site.
