A newbie beginning my adventure with a 1957 Evinrude Big Twin that I bought at auction last month. Don’t know much history on it except that the owner had used it up until last summer.

Tested it in a barrel of water. It starts nicely. Sounds good. Impeller seems to be working nicely based on the amount of water being ejected.

    A couple of questions.

    1) I does seem to smoke quite a bit.

    2) A little more concerning, after a couple of minutes of running, an oil slick developed on the surface of the water. Dark gray with some spots of black. Doesn’t seem normal.  See attached photos.

    Thoughts? Advice?

    Thanks in advance.

all normal condition since  30-40% of the incoming fuel oil mix goes out  the exhaust ports when the piston are on the down strokes

a bucket run is the place where it all collects and can’t spread out…like on a lake!

that is why direct injection motors are so clean and cheaper on fuel  !   My 75 ETEC burns less fuel than my 45 Classic Merc did !   2 cups of gas/hr   trolling

smoke is ok to… you won’t see much cruising………   good for bugs to !

Not uncommon when running in a barrel, especially during long periods of idling.  You might want to try some of the more eco friendly synthetic oils to minimize this.
