hello, i had a post about three years ago about my qd19.i bought it in nice shape and did the usual things to get it running.coils, points and condensers.carb rebuild, impeller.i go to maine every summer and run it on the lake.it ran great but would leave a large embarassing oil slick as i slowed down and got to the dock.i tried changing mixture screw adjustments but it didnt change.i pulled the power head and replaced the dried out o-ring in the carbon seal but no change.last year i took the powerhead apart.i swapped the dump valve from another engine, cleaned all passages , and put a new set of rings on the pistons.i found that this engine has already been apart and has the updated pistons and connecting rods.it still left a big oil slick.this year i got another carburetor and rebuilt it.still a big oil slick.i have a qd17,qd20,qd21 and they hardly leave any oil deposits at all.i’m confused.the engine runs great and does not load up the plugs.could there be too much pressure in the tank?is there a pressure relief valve somewhere.i’m pretty sure i used the same tank on my qd17 with no problem.could there be a problem with the block? i have another block, should i swap the parts over? sorry for the long story.i’m lost

August 16, 2017 at 2:08 pm #63216All the old 2 strokes leave some kind of oil trail. If you are worried, use synthetic outboard oil mix. It is more biodegradable and lake friendly. Also look at the current thread about unburned fuel collection. You can find others on the same subject if you do a search.
August 16, 2017 at 2:19 pm #632172-strokes are dirty. Nature of the beasts… As noted above, there are some things you can do to alleviate the worst of it. Running the motor as lean as possible on the carb settings without running too lean (plugs a nice light chocolate, not white), running the correct fuel mixture, making sure you’ve got the right plugs, etc. can make sure it is running as efficiently as possible.
